Art or handicraft? 2012

packaging detail of tablecloths painted by Mithila women on old textiles

meeting and exchange

Also Nepal is a workplace for me: the ubiquitous handiwork and crafts are an endless source of inspiration.
It started in 2006 with play projects for orphans in eastern Nepal; later I began to experiment with making art and limited-edition products locally along with small businesses and craftspeople.
I use the proceeds of these products to fund the next series of adventurous collaboration projects, with the "felt women", the "embroidery man" and the "paper man" in Kathmandu, or the Mithila-painting women in southern Nepal.
Although the various projects yield beautiful "physical" results, it is the process of collaborating and documenting that matters to me most. Particularly in situations full of communicative limitations, people find each other at the universal interfaces I'm searching for.

autonomous work

In the early works on rice paper, the starting point was always a picture connected to the time I was a child.

collaboration

There came a moment when being engaged exclusively in my own art was no longer enough. I started working on projects that involved cooperation with non-artists.

documenting

The essence of documenting is watching and listening: you catch the moment when something is created that matters, and you zero in on it.
